Activities To Do At and Around Karpe's Wadi :
(Charges not included in the tariff. Guests pay directly to the service providers.)

At Karpe's Wadi :

•  Water sports :
As always, the best things in life are free. Walk 1 minute through the Suru forest to the wide, clean, pristine and safe strip of secluded beach. Go for an early morning exhilarating walk / run or an evening stroll (ask the management for tide timings!). Play beach cricket, frisbee, football or volleyball in the water. The water is perfectly safe, clean and inviting. Work up an appetite and after a filling lunch, relax in the shady hammocks. Bring a telescope or binoculars and observe the planets, stars, nighttime fishing vessels or the birds at the resort.

•  Sunrise / Sunset Boat trip : Needs 1-day advance notice. Travel with a local fisherman in a small boat on a 10-minute sunset cruise (Rs 100 p.p.) or a 1-½ hour cruise to the Colaba Lighthouse (Rs 250 p.p.).

•  Horse Carriage Ride : Breathe the refreshing sea air and feel the wind rustle through your hair as the gentle rhythm of a rustic horse-cart takes you on a 10-minute ride on the beach (Rs 50).

•  Parasailing : Harness yourself to a large parachute and get lifted in the air as a jeep pulls you (Rs. 500 p.p.).

•  Bullock Cart Races : In Chaitra (usually April), the area around Karpe's Wadi (the dirt road right outside the gates of Karpe's Wadi) comes alive with highly competitive bullock-cart races that carry lucrative prizes. You can see the contestants prepare their animals for a month before the races. Please check with management about the race dates and timings so that you are not inconvenienced if you are arriving during this period.

The area around Karpe's Wadi has several popular tourist destinations within 1-2 hours of drive :

•  Birla Ganesh Mandir : Located just 11 kms / 30 minutes away, this Ganesh Mandir is on the to-do list of every visitor.

•  Sculpture Museum, Sasawne village : A famous sculptor, Mr Karmarkar, lived in this village on the Alibaug-Mandwa road. His house and his workshop have been converted into a living museum. Famous among them are a buffalo and several artifacts of everyday use. A good way to spend an hour if you are artistically inclined.

•  Colaba Fort, Alibaug : At low tide, you can walk the 1 kilometer distance from the beach to the fort but at high tide, you should NOT risk to navigate the waters that fill up the space. Please check with the horse carriage operators about tide timings when you visit. It takes about an hour to explore the fort (visitor fee: Rs 5, video camera charge: ridiculously high)

•  Kashid Beach : Located 25 kms / 1 hour away, Kashid is a wide, clean and pristine beach. Caution: it is NOT safe to wade into the water.

•  Korlaigad and Light House : An hour away from the resort, Korlaigad is occupied by a family that operates the lighthouse. Ask them to give you a tour (visitor fee: Rs 5, it does get claustrophobic in the room housing the light). One of a string of 24 lighthouses from Mumbai to Ratnagiri, it is worth a visit. You may buy dried 'sukat' from the fishermen in the village on the way back. The Korlaigad itself is abandoned with very little to see.

•  Murud-Janjira fort : 40 kms / 1.5 hours away is the famous, invincible Janjira fort. A 10-minute ferry ride takes you to the fort where descendents of the historical figure, Siddi Johar, give you a tour of the abandoned fort. They won't tell you how the 'habshi' i.e. Abyssinian (today's Ethiopia ) Siddi poisoned the entire population of caretakers of the fort trecherously to take its control. The once-majestic fort is in ruins, overgrown with weeds and littered with refuse. A shameful state for a heritage site!
